Getting a house ready to sell: Top 3 Things to Improve the Curb Appeal of your Home

Curb Appeal: Where to spend your time & money when getting a house ready to sell

While the outside of the home may only account for about 10% of its value, the front of the house is what creates the all-important first impression when you’re getting a house ready to sell.

Here are some simple things you can do to make a GREAT first impression.

Getting a house ready to sell: Tip 1 – Shrubs

Getting a House Ready to Sell - When You Can't See the Front You Lose Curb Appeal

Even without staging or accessories - the home is already more attractive.

Many lovely homes are hidden behind barriers of shrubbery that have grown out of control over the last decade.

If you start early enough, you’ll have a chance to aggressively prune back the overgrowth and reveal an attractive, welcoming facade.

Removing visual barriers to the facade makes the home look larger, the impact is seen in more attractive photographs and a more inviting first impression.

Getting a House Ready to Sell: Tip 2 – Accessories

The Front Door 'Before'

Storm Removed, Interior Door Painted

Now that you can see the front of your house, consider replacing the house numbers and mailbox with a matching design and more current style. Then put in some colourful, seasonal plants.

A bit of colour at the front of the house really brings it to life.

Ask yourself, ‘should I paint the porch, or steps, or handrails?’  If the storm door is unsightly, remove it and repaint   the door jamb and the front side of the interior door.

Getting a House Ready to Sell: Tip 3 – Organize & Clean

Depending on the season there are things you should do:

  • Seed and mow the grass and use an edger at the sidewalk.
  • Clean the eavestroughs.
  • Put away the garden hose
  • Pick up loose litter as far as your neighbours on either side
  • Get the garbage cans out of sight.
  • Finally, clean the windows till they squeak!

When it’s done right, it shouldn’t look like you’re getting a house ready to sell. It should look like you have a perfectly composed, spacious, organized, home. It should be the solution to the Buyers needs.
